From what I have read, there seems to be an overlap between Cloud management platforms and Configuration Management Software like Chef. I would like to have some feedback from customers who have been using both software to learn more about some common use cases.

Safe way to sync directories on two servers via S3

We have a CMS that runs on multiple app severs in our RightScale server array. They each write to their local filesystem and a shared database. When one of our users uploads new template files to the CMS, it only gets written to the local filesystem.

We have a script that runs every minute which automatically commits new files to a subversion repository after running a 'svn up' to get new files added. This is most definitely a sub-optimal solution.

Are there any RightScale-provided tools which we can use to synch the local directories to S3? Files created, modified, or deleted should be synched to S3. Since both servers would be running the same script, I'm thinking they would both send and receive updates on S3.

Or, is there a better solution than S3? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

Using RightScale, we have a master/slave database architecture. However, on more than one occasion, our master DB has gone down. Amazon just seems to shrug and say "the underlying host became unresponsive". We have to manually promote the slave to master, launch a new slave, and let it synch. We then kill the old server. For the duration of this process, our site is unavailable.

That sort of thing really isn't acceptable to us... is there an alternative to maximize redundancy? How do other people deal with this sort of thing?

Hi guys

Might not be the best place to get help on this, but.. I'm quite new to using AWS and have a particular need for the server to do some streaming work. I've noticed the audio suffers some disruption on a regular basis and I can also see that roughly every 30 seconds, ruby.exe in C:\Program Files\RightScale\SandBox\Ruby\bin is lauched, hammers the cpu for a second and then quits again

Any ideas what it's doing, and can I disable it?

Thanks
The plugin works great but I am unable to get all of my results to show up on the same graph. the metrics from passenger currently being reported are max threads, active threads, inactive threads, and items waiting on global queue. Each of these metrics currently show up in a separate graph. I've seen other collectd graph with all metrics in one view with colored lines. How do I go about getting this to happen? the code that outputs the values is below. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
